A strong background in biology, chemistry and research; balanced by a firm belief in the innate wisdom of the natural world guide Dr. DeWitt in her practice of pediatrics, womens health and reproductive health, including fertility treatments, preconception health and care through pregnancy and childbirth.
Dr. Karen Celeste DeWitt is a licensed naturopathic physician practicing family medicine and midwifery at Canyon Medical Center in Portland, Oregon.
While I love pediatrics and family medicine, midwifery is my calling. I go home from every birth renewed with love for my family and filled with wonder for the process of birth. I believe mothers instinctively know how to bring their babies into this world and my mission is to protect this. I am certain that when women feel safe, cared for, and trusting of their care providers, physiologic birth happens. My job as a midwife is to hold space for the intricate dance that happens when birth is left, to a large degree, undisturbed, all the while ensuring the medical safety of mom and baby during the process.
Whether helping a first time mom realize her power and victory in the birth process or assisting a fifth-time mom with her first natural birth, I continue to be amazed at the processes of pregnancy and birth. To me, birth is a sacred, natural, and empowering experience. I have 3 sons, all born at home, and a very supportive husband who loves hearing all my birth stories! We are so fortunate to call the pacific NW our home and love exploring the mountains, the coast and the city. I also love to bake grain-free treats, read magazines on Saturday mornings with a hot cup of coffee, working out in my pajamas with my kids playing around me, and date nights with my sweetheart.
Dr. Lyon was born and raised in Salt Lake City, UT. As a child, her mother instilled the importance of a healthy-lifestyle through nutrition, natural medicine, and exercise. After discovering a love of the Northwest, Dr. Lyon moved to Portland, Oregon to attend the University of Portland. There, she obtained a degree in psychology and biology, with the intention of going to medical school. While attending UP, Dr. Lyon participated in the development of research manuals and protocols for the Helfgott Research Institute, affiliated with the National College of Natural Medicine. It was at this time the door to natural medicine was opened.
When not seeing patients, Dr. Lyon loves to spend time with her two young children and husband, backpack in the Northwest, garden, cook, read, sew, and raise backyard chickens.
Dr. Williams knew as a high school student that she would be a physician. She went on to receive a B.A. with honors from Spelman College in Atlanta, GA as a Spanish major with a Premedical Studies focus. She had a unique opportunity during her undergraduate education in which she was selected to spend an entire summer in a simulated medical school experience at Howard University Hospital in Washington, D.C. There she completed two rotations in the Labor and Delivery and Emergency departments. This is where she believed to have gained a competitive edge that ultimately led to her success as a medical student.
Dr. Williams is a graduate of the National College of Natural Medicine where she received her doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine and certificate in Natural Childbirth. As a student she completed several clinical internships with a focus in women’s health, chronic disease management, and minor surgery to name a few. She also completed an intensive post-doctoral externship here at Canyon Medical Center. The rigor that Dr. Williams experienced in this capacity undoubtedly prepared her to care for a large variety of patients with keen practical knowledge that can only be achieved “on-the-job”.
When she is not tending to her patients, Dr. Williams spends her leisure time with her loving husband, son and Yorkshire Terrier, Bentley. She is also a proud and active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, an international community service based organization dedicated to the scholastic advancement of women.
